All Heritage Center programs and activities are happening virtually until further notice

The following exercise classes are under the direction of Group Fitness at The J. The J offers health and fitness programs for seniors in Kansas City that are specifically made to benefit each participant, creating a longer and healthier life. As a benefit to Members of The J, those with a senior single or senior couple membership may attend these classes.

All are free of charge to J Members.  Learn more about Senior Membership at The J.

Heritage Center Members who have paid the $70 membership fee may participate in these classes through the purchase of an exercise punch card (see prices below).

Fitness Class Punch Card

Purchase a 5-punch or 10-punch card and utilize it for the Heritage Center fitness classes listed below. Just bring your punch card to class and the instructor will take care of the rest. Cards may be purchased at the Heritage Center office.

Gentle Pilates

Pilates is an ordered series of exercises that help build flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance. All floor work.
Cost: 1 punch per class


Functional Circuit

This total body workout is a great way for older adults to get started with strength training. The exercises focus on building total body strength with an emphasis on improving balance, stability, and flexibility.
Cost: 1 punch per class


Zumba Lite

A low impact version of our regular Zumba class, Zumba Lite is a fun dance cardio workout for all fitness levels.
Cost: 1 punch per class


Gentle Floor Yoga

Gentle Floor Yoga classes are designed to open the body, stretch and tone the muscles, increase balance, and also bring inner-awareness and a sense of peace within.
Cost: 1 punch per class


Tai Chi

Gain freedom from potential falls using 24 movements to increase balance and flexibility. The class is easy to follow and beginners are not only welcomed, but encouraged to attend.
Cost: 1 punch per class



Kinesis is an alternative form of personal training emphasizing controlled movements to enhance strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. Learn More

Chair Yoga

Chair yoga includes stretching poses (asanas), breathwork (prana yama) and meditation for the purpose of promoting flexibility and mobility.

Fitness For Health (F4H)

(Formerly Cardio Fitness & Enhanced Fitness) This low-impact class focuses on cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance to optimize health. Focus is given to functional fitness moves that help improve activities of everyday living such as getting in and out of a chair and reaching for something on the top shelf .Participants can sit or stand as exercises can be modified for all ages and abilities.

Enjoy 45 minutes of engaging exercise that offers variety and challenge. Then participate in 15 minutes of Q & A with the instructor.

Water Fit

This class is low-impact and great for those just getting started on an exercise routine. Participants must obtain a Heritage Center restricted membership card available at The J Main Reception Desk.

Rock Steady Boxing + Parkinsons Movement Class

Nearly everyone with Parkinson’s disease can participate and receive benefit from Rock Steady Boxing. This class uses boxing to lessen the symptoms of Parkinson's and lead to a healthier and happier life.

Mon/Wed/Fri  |  10:45 - 11:45 am  

The movement class uses physical activity as a key to delaying or alleviating the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. This class uses rhythmic dance movement to improve strength, balance, and flexibility, which keeps the connection between the mind and body strong. Participants can be both seated or standing.

Thu  |  11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Medicare + You

Location: Board Room
Cost: Free
Upcoming dates: 8/16/2020, 11/22/2020

Anyone about to turn 65 or already receiving Medicare should attend this class. The class will be taught by Larry Green, HIA, MHP, a retired 40-year veteran of the health insurance industry, specializing in regulatory compliance. Larry will discuss Medicare eligibility and enrollment, Parts A and B of Medicare, Prescription Drug Program, Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage Plans. Please bring your Medicare handbook as copies are limited.

Visiting Nurse

Blood pressure readings are offered each month and glucose tests will be available in the odd month. The glucose test does require a 2 hour fast. Appointments not required.

Hearing Aid Checks, Cleanings, + Screenings

Protect your health by taking advantage of free hearing screenings, hearing aid checks, and hearing aid cleanings through American Hearing and Audiology. Hearing aid checks and cleanings are drop-in only and take approximately 20 minutes.
