The J offers the highest quality fine arts classes for seniors in Kansas City through the Heritage Center programs. Whether you're a beginner wanting to learn the foundations of art, to more advanced classes like ceramics and advanced drawing, we offer a variety of classes to allow your creativity to blossom. Fine arts classes benefit seniors by offering sensory stimulation, increasing mood, and providing a sense of control and accomplishment.

Supplies are included for most classes when fee. The below classes are ongoing and can be started at any time contingent upon availability/open spots.

Virtual Classes

Portrait Painting Techniques

$49 for 3-week session

In this class we will use a limited palette to complete a copy of portrait by John Singer Sargent in oil. Together we will progress step by step from a value study, to learning about the specifics colors that we find in skin tones and how to mix them, and culminating in the structure of the facial features. Lacey will complete a demonstration so that students can paint along and see in detail how the painting progresses through its various stages. The lessons learned in this class can be applied to portraits done from any reference or from life.

Ceramics - Make & Take Vases

$110 for 4-week session | Materials + Firing Included
Instructor: Elaine Buss

Make a vase to proudly display in your home with fresh cut flowers! In this class we will learn to build a vase using coil building techniques. Not only that, but learn strategies for making the exact(-ish, exact is only ever approximate in clay!) shapes that you want using templates and special techniques. For finishing our pieces, we will cover some beautiful decoration methods using underglaze. Students will finish the pieces with a clear gloss glaze. Skill level: All

Ceramics - Texture Triptych

$110 for 4-week session | Materials + Firing Included
Instructor: Elaine Buss

You’ve been spending a lot of time at home – so let’s use your surroundings as inspiration for a wall hanging triptych! In this class you will learn how to make a textured slab wall hanging. For texture we will impress flowers, leaves, and other objects that are at hand to create something of our home, for our home. The surfaces will be finished using an underglaze inlay process and a clear gloss coating.

About the Instructor:

Elaine Buss received a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Ohio State University in 2018. Her metaphorical approach to materials has garnered multiple recognitions, including the 2019 Emerging Artist Award from Ceramics Monthly and Best in Show in the University of Montana’s International MFA Exhibition for her installation Wander | Wonder (2018). Her work is in several notable collections, including Honos Art in Rome, Italy and the Baggs Library in Columbus, Ohio. Most recently, her work was featured in the Art Basel Miami edition of Create! Magazine. Elaine’s other awards include the Global Gateway Grant, The International Award for Visual and Performing Arts, both from Ohio State University, and an ArtistInc Fellowship from the Mid-America Arts Alliance in Kansas City, Missouri. She is currently a Career Resident at Belger Crane Yard Studios in Kansas City, Missouri, where she continues her material research and sculptural practice.

Foundations of Art - IN-PERSON TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED

This is an introductory art class where students explore a variety of well-known painting, drawing and mixed media techniques to determine their personal areas of interest. Supplies included. Skill level: Beginner

Mixed Media - IN-PERSON TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED

$105/per 12-week session

Explore a variety of media, application techniques and surfaces, including but not limited to acrylic, ink, soft and oil pastels, Prismacolor pencil, collage, paper, canvas and wood. New ideas will also be explored. The possibilities are endless! Skill level: Beginner/intermediate

Advanced Painting/Drawing/Portraits - IN-PERSON TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED

Students use their acquired skills to create works of art in a variety of media. Students select their own subject matter and work individually to create works of art specific to their liking. Supplies included. Skill level: Advanced
